Every Colour 3-25 August 2024
Curator Beata Geyer invited me to present work in the group exhibition Every Colour at the Articulate project space ARI in Leichhardt, Sydney.

60-minute video capture of real-time digital generation

HD video, sound

Created for Beata Geyer’s exhibition every colour, this generative digital work references the decades-long series of paintings Homage to the Square by artist and educator Josef Albers.

Using Albers’ ratio for the squares in his paintings, four unstable circular forms are overlaid from smallest to largest. Slowly, their boundaries deform and colours change, determined by an algorithm in which numerical values slowly oscillate between zero and one in ten-thousandth incremental steps for each red, green, and blue channel combined to computationally define a colour. Varying periods of oscillation ensure random, non-repeating combinations between the four shapes.

The number values also generate accompanying sine wave tones via three digital audio oscillators.

studio drawings July 2024

colour pencil, ink, acrylic, graphite on 200gsm paper

12 works, each 240 x 320mm

This series of small studies continues my interest in systems of abstract image production.

A few small pools of Sennelier ink are placed on a sheet of paper. Held in the hands, the paper is carefully moved to encourage the ink to travel around, drawing a bounding form. When dry, the cells of the form are filled by making quick, intuitive selections of media and colour. Each drawing is a singular irregularity documenting tensions between control and chaos, choice and chance.

Gary Warner is an artist who works mainly in sound, drawing and digital media. He is the host and composer of the podcast ‘Sonic Sketchbooks’, a member of the improvisational modular synthesis trio CHORDATA and the video-sonic trio ochromosonico, a board member of the artist-run initiative DRAW Space, and teaches experimental drawing at the National Art School.

Articulate Turns 14 30 November – 15 December 2024
For Articulate’s 14th end-of-year exhibition, I created codebook 3: sound drawings using the softwares Processing and TouchDesigner. Each animation, like an immaterial sketchbook page, presents an idea of digital pixel choreography explored, appearing as illusory monochrome drawings bearing visual aspects of traditional drawing media (charcoal, graphite, ink) and performatively responding to time-smeared audio recordings of my ‘aleatoric ensemble’ analogue sonic sculptures.
